If People Vote Against Vouchers, He'll Stand By Decision

(KCPW News) On Monday, State officials will announce whether voucher opponents were able to gather enough signatures to put vouchers to a vote of the people. Governor Jon Huntsman says, if the referendum effort succeeds, he will call the election during the Presidential primary on February 5th of next year.

The vote, if it happens, will take place during the 2008 Legislative session. Huntsman says, if the people vote against vouchers, he will support ending the voucher program. He adds if the vote runs against vouchers, and lawmakers attempt to bring vouchers back after the vote, he will oppose that effort.

The current voucher law is scheduled to take effect on July 1st of this year. If it makes it on the ballot, Huntsman says he expects legal action and injunctions to put that on hold.
