Referendum Petition Results Will Be Announced Today

(KCPW News) Today voucher opponents will find out if they collected enough signatures to put the issue to a public vote. At 10 a.m. this morning Lieutenant Governor Gary Herbert will announce the result of the referendum petition effort for vouchers and the ReAL Soccer Stadium.

Organizers of the stadium referendum say they doubt they gathered enough signatures, but voucher opponents collected more than 131,000 names and believe they have plenty to qualify.

Utahns for Public Schools consists largely of public school teachers and parents who hope the Lieutenant Governor's announcement today will clear the way for the Governor to put vouchers on the next statewide ballot. Huntsman has said he is likely to hold that election in February.

A legal loophole could implement vouchers in the interim, though a spokesperson says Utahns for Public Schools is prepared to try and stop that with legal action.
