Immigrants Rights Groups Plan Gathering in SLC Tomorrow

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) A little more than a year ago, tens of thousands of Utah immigrants marched in Salt Lake City to call for "fair and just" immigration reform. Similar marches will happen again tomorrow around the country, but local groups are planning a petition drive rather than a march.

Organizer Antonella Packard says the goal is to collect signatures from immigrants who are both citizens and residents seeking citizenship status to show Congress the immigrant community does have political clout. The U.S. House and Senate are still at odds over reform, and President Bush's call for a guest worker program, in particular. The petition drive is Tuesday, May 1st from 3 - 7 p.m. on the lawn of the Salt Lake City and County Building.
