Utah's Water Week Preaches Conservation
None by Eric Ray
(KCPW News) This year's abnormally warm early spring could have a devastating effect on Utah's water supply in the years to come. Brian McInerney, a hydrologist for the National Weather Service, says this year's water supply is only 30% to 40% of normal. He says the water supply should be fine this summer because of strong reservoir storage during the past several years, but another early runoff next year could cause problems.Next week has been tabbed "Water Week" by Governor Jon Huntsman and people will be encouraged to concentrate on conservation.
Stephanie Duer, Salt Lake City's Water Conservation Coordinator, says people can save up to nine gallons of water each time they brush their teeth just by shutting off the tap. She adds to check household toilets because 13% to 18% of all water consumption in homes comes from leaks.
