S.L. County Council Likely To Support Bond For Hogle Zoo

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) A $65 million bond requested by Hogle Zoo to continue upgrades and add more animal exhibits appears to have the backing of the Salt Lake County Council. The Council will discuss the bond next week and it's likely they'll send the request to the County Debt Review Committee.

Hogle Zoo has added exhibits for elephants and big cats over the last several years, and has plans to add a polar bear exhibit, among others. While $65 million sounds like a large bond, County Councilman Joe Hatch says the zoo can't take on too many big projects at once. Therefore the money would be given to the zoo over a period of five to ten years - meaning the tax burden put on the public won't be as high.

Hogle Zoo has offered to help pay polling costs in order to get the bond on a countywide ballot. Hatch says that likely won't be necessary because there is already a statewide election scheduled for vouchers and the zoo bond could be added to that election.
