Immigration Deal Would Help 90K Undocumented Immigrants in Utah

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) An agreement reached by a bi-partisan group of Senators today would grant legal status to more than 90,000 undocumented immigrants in Utah. Tony Yapias of the Utah Latino Project calls the proposal "historic" and says it's better than previous proposals in Congress.

The agreement would grant legal status to an estimated 12-million undocumented immigrants already in the country and establishes a merit-based system for future immigrants. The compromise also calls for more security of the U.S. border.

Yapias organized a record-breaking immigration march in Utah last summer. Now, he says the local Latino community should focus on calling Congress to approve the agreement.

Tomorrow the Latin American Cultural and Education Association of Utah will deliver 6,500 signatures to Utah's Congressional Delegation calling for immigration reform that will keep immigrant families together in the U.S.
