Board Waits for Lawsuit Over Vouchers
(KCPW News) Leaders of the Utah State School Board were rushing to prepare for a legal battle over vouchers this week. But KCPW's Julie Rose reports the Board is in the clear - at least for now:
Leaders of the Utah State School Board expected to be sued this week for failing to implement a school voucher program. They even told members to be ready for an emergency meeting today to hire an attorney. But spokesman Mark Peterson says the lawsuit never happened, so board leaders called off the meeting plans. Still, the board is not off the hook.
The Utah Attorney General says the board it is in violation of the law and must implement vouchers immediately. Peterson says at this point the board will take no action until it's next meeting on June 7th. Board member Mark Cluff - one of only two vocal voucher supporters on the board - wants an earlier meeting to comply with the law. He doubts that will happen, though, since the majority of the board wants to quote "prevent vouchers at all cost."
Voucher supporters say school choice should be implemented because lawmakers passed a second bill that will not be affected by the upcoming referendum. Pro-voucher groups and state lawmakers are both considering filing a lawsuit against the State School Board.
