IKEA-Draper Opens with Swedish Style

None by KCPW

Lisa Criswell and Matt Juillerat were first in line, waiting 72 hours for IKEA to open.

(KCPW News) The Swedes saw a log to celebrate new home, so IKEA did the same for the grand opening of its mega store in Draper this (yesterday) morning. Hundreds of people camped overnight on the sidewalk to get first crack at the store's merchandise. Jessie and Emily Thompson of Provo spent the night for the freebies, and planned to shop for new kitchen appliances opening day.

"It's the whole ambiance, the experience is what we came for, it's an adventure!" said Jessie Thompson.

"And the T-shirts and the water bottles and the frisbees and rubber duckies and donuts and . . .it keeps getting better and better!" adds Emily Thompson.

Governor Huntsman and Draper Mayor Darrell Smith joined the opening-day festivities to celebrate the boost IKEA will bring to state and local tax revenues. IKEA-Draper is the company's 30th store in the U.S. and first in the Intermountain West.
