UTA Adds $1.5M to Meet Address Concerns with Bus Re-Design

(KCPW News) The UTA transit authority changed 70-percent of the bus routes in its proposed re-design as a result of community outcry. Spokesman Justin Jones says concerns from eastside residents and the U of U community made up a large percentage of the public comment.The UTA Board of Trustees voted unanimously yesterday to spend an extra million and a half dollars a year to add routes that meet those needs. Community groups that had been critical of the proposed bus redesign are pleased that their concerns will be addressed. However, they remain upset the UTA Board also voted to increase bus fares by ten cents next year and ultimately to two-dollars in 2009.
Rather than hike fares, they say UTA should do more advertising and PR to increase ridership and boost revenues. The fare increase takes effect in July and bus route changes follow in August.
