Rocky Wants To Sell The Air Above Main Street

Part of an Effort to Stop Construction of a Skybridge

(KCPW News)  Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson says he will do whatever it takes to prevent construction of a skybridge across Main Street in downtown. One idea he's floating - selling the property rights to the air above Main Street. The mayor says he's exploring conveying the air rights as a conservation easement.

Anderson has long railed against a skybridge as part of the City Creek Center redevelopment of the downtown malls - likening it to a "hamster tube" that will lead to the ruination of other businesses on Main Street.
The City Council gave preliminary approval to the skybridge. Anderson vetoed the change, but was overridden. But Anderson says he can convey those air rights above Main Street without Council approval.

Anderson says he doesn't have a buyer in mind for the air rights. He does think he'll have to get an appraisal in order to set a fair market value.

This article makes the idea sound much crazier than it is. I do think it might be a long shot to make it happen, but this isn't some unheard of notion. I hope that people will listen to the audio.

Is Mayor Anderson and idiot or what? The guy seems to just thrive on being opposite and difficult. I used to live in Tulsa, OK and in their downtown district they have several sky bridges. Its acutally quite cool and nice from a consumer and business perspective. I think it also adds contrast to the skyline view from the street. I vote we impeach Anderson. How about that. He's not about progress he's about personal agendas, not what is in the best interest of the citizens and visitors to SLC.
