Utah Residents Paying More In Mandatory Fees

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) Mandatory fees charged to Utah's taxpayers are on the rise according to a new study by the Utah Foundation. The state ranks 20th in the nation when it comes to state and local tax burdens, however Utah jumps to 11th when mandatory fees are accounted for.

Mandatory fees include garbage pickup, sewer service, and police, courts and library funding. Utah has gone from 16th in the nation in mandatory fees in 1992 to 3rd in the nation in 2005.

The Utah Foundation report is based on the 2004-2005 fiscal year and does not account for recent tax law changes in the state, including the flat tax and the removal of a portion of the state sales tax on food. More information from this report is available at www.utahfoundation.org.
