Huntsman Eyes Removal of Sales Tax on Food
None by Eric Ray
(KCPW News) The state of Utah is once again going to have a large surplus following the 2007 fiscal year, but Utah Governor Jon Huntsman isn't making tax cuts a top priority. Although, Huntsman says he wouldn't mind seeing the Legislature completely remove the sales tax on food. That could be an uphill battle as it's believed the Legislature would be reticent to remove the food tax altogether. Huntsman believes it's possible because the Legislature has made food tax concessions for the last two years. He says removing the food tax is attractive because it benefits everyone. When asked about spending the state's surplus, Huntsman pointed to teacher compensation as his top priority. He said air quality and closing the gap on the uninsured as areas of focus as well.
