(KCPW News) United States Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was in Salt Lake City today to speak to the National Sheriffs' Conference. Gonzales addressed the rise of violent crime in the U.S., and he says recent visits to 18 metropolitan areas revealed that "no one approach can solve the violent crime problems that these communities face."Gonzales called for Congress to pass new legislation that would extend the statute of limitations for violent crimes and establish enhanced penalties for crimes committed by illegal aliens. Gonzales also says immigration reform would help fight violent crime, in part because immigrant victims would no longer be afraid to report crimes committed by the gangs that target them.
Gonzales says if the immigration bill isn't passed, the pressure on the border will continue and criminal activity surrounding illegal immigration will persist. A longer excerpt from Gonzales' speech can be heard below.

Some of us feel that what's happening to our once great nation as everyone’s responsibility.
I have just as much jurisdiction over people outside of our law, outside of any article in our Constitution, and outside of our country as any one in our government.
The government is acting in a criminal manner when it CLAIMS it can allow just anyone one from anywhere in the world to come in here and move freely between states. The ONLY provision that protects people from moving freely between States is for legal residence and people that have come in the front door!
