Developer Promises to Make the Neighborhood "Family Friendly"
(KCPW News) Six months ago, Sugar House businesses like the Blue Boutique, Sugarhouse Coffee and Orion's music got eviction notices. They had until this month to move out and make way for a major development. A few shops are still hanging on for another month or two, but their time is short. The building's owner has preliminary sketches for a shiny new mall and says demolition is imminent. KCPW's Julie Rose reports:
Salt Lake City officials tell KCPW the owner of the building on 21st South and Highland Drive is expected to submit plans for his new mixed-use development in two to three weeks. When he does, city officials hope to hold a series of public hearings on the proposal.

The world is constantly changing. Although there is a certain feeling that the West side of 11th East has, it may even be better with some updating. Right now, it isn't exactly family friendly, and maybe the updated stores will be more so. In today's society, we are all being constantly asked to adapt, adapt, adapt. So maybe this will be a good thing as we see how these businesses adapt.

Ryan, those shops that currently exist in Sugar House are not what I would call "hometown". People are not shopping in Sugar House because of quality of people hanging around those shops on the granite block. Families do not frequent that coffee shop, blue boutique, orions music, or the free speach zone. Not a very good caliber of people hanging out in those places. Unless you are into piercings and tattoos and only wear black. What makes Sugar House Sugar House is the entire business district begining up by shopko ("Wal Mart" type of existence). It also goes all the way down to 700 East. That is what makes Sugar House Sugar House.

Ben, Things don't need to adapt to a "Wal Mart" type of existence. People are not protesting upgrades or beauty changes, they're protesting the loss of what makes Sugarhouse, Sugarhouse. It's about the loss of those hometown shops, not the loss of the shops shoddy buildings.
