Two More Immigration Clinics Offer Help With Citizenship Papers

None by Lara Jones

Applications Must Be Postmarked by Saturday to Avoid Fee Hike

(KCPW News) Two more immigration clinics will be held to help immigrants legally residing in Utah file their citizenship papers before fees rise on Monday. Immigration attorney Marlene Gonzalez says her clients put off the paperwork for a variety of reasons:

"Emotional connection to the birth country, the other [client] was just a mom and she was just very busy raising her children. Her sons are grown now, and now she finally gets around to processing her naturalization application."

Currently, the citizenship application fee is $400. That price rises to as much as $675 next week, says Gonzalez. To help immigrants complete the 10-page application, Gonzalez and other members of the Multi-Cultural Legal Center will staff two more immigration clinics:

"Tonight there's going to be another immigration clinic from 5:30 to 9 o'clock, and tomorrow morning, Saturday, from 8 o'clock to noon. The idea is we need to get these applications mailed out by tomorrow."

The free immigration clinics will be held at the offices of Poder Para la Familia, 1737 South Redwood Road, Salt Lake City. You can contact them during clinic hours at (801) 972-2018 for more details.
