Hope for Special Session August 15 or 16
(KCPW News) Utah legislators hope to meet in special session in two weeks to consider proposals designed to grease the wheels for school district splits. But before they do, they will hold a public hearing.
"I think it would be helpful to hear from the public on the two proposals for funding growth, and to get their feedback," says State Senator Howard Stephenson.
Stephenson has crafted one of the proposals to allocate funding for school district buildings around the state from a single pool of money based on enrollment growth. His proposal uses property taxes. Another proposal taps income tax revenues. Lawmakers would consider both proposals in special session, says Stephenson.
They plan to hold a public hearing on August 14th and hope Governor Huntsman will call a special session for the following day. Governor's spokesperson Lisa Roskelley says Huntsman is not considering a special session at this time, and will only change his mind if lawmakers can demonstrate a strong consensus for one of the funding proposals.
