Zoo Bond Vote Postponed for Lack of Support

(KCPW News) Supporters of a 65-million dollar bond for Hogle Zoo improvements counted their votes yesterday and opted to hedge their bets. Salt Lake County Councilmen Joe Hatch and Randy Horiuchi asked for another week before holding a vote to put the bond on the ballot:"I thought a couple weeks ago we had the votes to put it on the ballot, but right now it's fifty-fifty and there's some work that needs to be done," says Horiuchi. "So we felt we needed a couple more weeks to gel this decision."
Horiuchi thinks the current council split is fifty-fifty. Hogle Zoo executive director Craig Dinsmore made his pitch to both the Salt Lake City and County Council's yesterday hoping for a positive vote. But several members of the County Council have concerns over the size of the bond, which will boost property taxes ten to twenty dollars a year. They also worry voter turnout this November won't be high enough to guarantee the bond's success.
The Salt Lake County Council must make its decision by August 23rd.
