"Deliberative Democracy" May Help Find Solution To Immigration

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) A local college professor is hoping to accomplish what the federal government could not - fostering a consensus on how to handle immigration in the U.S.

Jeffrey Nielsen, a professor of Philosophy at Westminster College and Utah Valley State College, is the organizer of the new Citizens Council on Immigration. He hopes to change the atmosphere of immigration discussions from debate and advocacy to what he calls "deliberative democracy" which brings ordinary citizens together to create dialogue and exchange ideas.

The Citizens Council on Immigration will hold a series of meetings concluding with a public forum next month. The forum is slated for September 2nd at 3pm at the Downtown Library.
