House cleanups to reduce risk of lead poisoning
(KCPW News) The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is giving low-income homes in Salt Lake County a $2 million makeover. The three-year Lead Hazard Control grant will reduce the risk of childhood lead poisoning, according to county housing official Randy Jepperson. "Most of the children who do get poisoned are living in older homes with wood-framed windows and cracked or peeling paint and dust," he says.Jepperson says the risk of lead poisoning is worst in Glendale, Rose Park and the Liberty Park area, where many of the homes were built before 1980 and some residents do not have the money to make repairs.
Salt Lake County residents who think they might be at risk for lead poisoning should call 468-3169 for detection and cleanup.
