County Council, Legislators At Odds Over Smaller Districts

Special Session Today May Not Convince County to Place Split on Ballot

(KCPW News) The Salt Lake County Council made it clear yesterday it is unlikely to approve any school district split for November's ballot. The move comes as Utah lawmakers convene special session at the County's request. KCPW's Julie Rose reports:

Members of the Salt Lake County Council yesterday made it clear they are unlikely to approve any school district split for November's ballot - no matter what Utah lawmakers do in special session today.

The County Council had previously implied it would be willing to support an East-side split, if the Utah Legislature could ensure equal funding for school buildings. That's precisely what legislators are doing today in special session. Now several members of the County Council say they want equalization only within a district, rather than across the entire county as lawmakers are planning.

Anticipating a roadblock, legislators will debate a new measure during today's session that will let East-side communities split from the Jordan School District without County Council approval. The proposal will go into effect immediately, if passed by two-thirds of the legislature.

The Salt Lake County Council will meet tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. to make its final decision on whether to put any district split on November's ballot.
