Walking to Honor the Migrant Dead

None by KCPW

SLC immigrant rights activist Temma Martin carries two crosses in honor of migrants who died at the border.

(KCPW News) Immigration reform is dead for now, as politicians in Washington transition to campaign mode. But increased border security and strict new workplace enforcement plans are moving forward. Meanwhile, advocates on both sides of the issue continue their efforts to draw attention to the impact millions of undocumented immigrants have on the U.S. economy. Salt Lake woman Temma Martin spent a week this summer on the U.S./Mexico border hoping to draw attention to an aspect of the issue that is rarely considered.

Salt Lake City resident Temma Martin is a local immigrant rights activist. The piece was produced by KCPW's Julie Rose.

I listened to the program this morning and I agree that there is a problem and I know there needs to be a resolution. I do think that there needs to be some kind of reform on immigration. I don't think that we should have closed borders. I wonder with those who have migrated here what kind of political action they are taking in their home countries. Why is it that I always hear of the need for U.S. to reform, but I don't ever hear anything about the countries to the south needing reformation, from their people, only the desire to leave? I sometimes feel that immigration is the easy solution, but not necessarily the best. How can we help the people to the south of us to become empowered in their own countries and over come the corruption that exists?
