Granite Board of Ed Works to Avoid Split

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) The Granite School District will not split this year. East side communities say they'll try again, because the district is just too big to meet their needs. KCPW's Julie Rose reports on a new effort by the Granite School Board to avoid a split:

East side communities in the Granite School District won't be splitting off this year, but haven't given up hope. They say the district is too big to respond to their needs. So, the Granite Board of Education is looking for ways to be more responsive.

Board President Sarah Meier hopes the effort will prevent a split. The Board held its first study session on the issue of responsiveness last week and will meet again tomorrow at 3:30. Meier says they'll keep meeting until they come up with a plan that will improve communication with parents and school communities. She'd like the Board to be more proactive in quelling rumors and addressing concerns. Board members will reach out to the community, rather than waiting for people to come to them.

A more responsive board may not be enough to stop the momentum toward a split. Granite School District is the state's second-largest district by the number of students it serves. The largest is the Jordan School District, which East side voters are likely to split with a vote this November.

There are two issues to be addressed one is capital improvements which we have all heard about over and over, but we must find a way to equalize the cost to get a child of ESL to graduation as compared to english speaking children. Superintendent Ronnencamp told me it is much more expensive to educate ESL Children. People in Federal Heights, Park City etc. profit from cheap labor, but they live in exclusive areas that don't have many ESL students in their school district, so they don't pay the costs of educating the families of their workforce. We need the state wide weighted pupil unit changed to reflect the added costs of education of these children. Thank you.
