SLC Mayoral Hopefuls Look To Reverse Voter Apathy

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) Both of Salt Lake City's mayoral candidates are planning efforts to get the attention of apathetic voters before the general election on November 6th. Fewer than thirty percent of the city's registered voters participated in this week's primary election.

City Councilman and Republican candidate Dave Buhler says more people seem to be interested in presidential elections than local mayoral campaigns. He adds the issues surrounding this campaign should be important to city residents.

Buhler's opponent, Democratic lawmaker Ralph Becker plans an attempt to gain the attention of the city's most apathetic voters. His plan is to reach out to the city's ethnic neighborhoods, particularly on the west side, in an effort to get those residents involved in the campaign.

The 2007 general election is slated for November 6th. A conversation with both Salt Lake City mayoral candidates is available as a podcast on the Midday Metro.

I did not vote because there were many running that I could and want as my next mayor. Once the field narrows I can research which of the two I like best. To say I pay more attention to the presidential race than the mayoral is unfair.
