Lights Off Tonight to Save Energy

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) For one hour tonight, between 9 and 10 p.m., the lights at the State Capitol Building, Salt Lake City Hall, and even the LDS Temple will go dark. Energy efficiency advocates are asking Utahns to do the same. The one-hour "Lights Off Utah" campaign is meant to show that even small changes can save energy, says Sarah Baldwin of Utah Clean Energy.

The actual energy saved by turning out the lights for an hour is relatively small, says Baldwin, but the point is to raise awareness. Saving energy also reduces greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to climate change, says Baldwin.

Governor Jon Huntsman, Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson and Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon have called for all government buildings in their jurisdictions to go lights-out from 9 until 10 tonight. Safety lighting in parking lots and on sidewalks will remain lit.
