Efforts To Honor Rampton May Hit Snag

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) Some political officials in Utah, mostly Democrats, are pushing to rename a public structure to honor late former Governor Cal Rampton.

Members of Salt Lake County Council, along with County Mayor Peter Corroon, are in favor of placing Rampton's name on the Salt Palace Convention Center. Republican Councilman Mark Crockett opposes the idea. Crockett sides with a recent report from the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau that the name should only be changed if it helps with business and branding.

Democratic Senator Scott McCoy says the Convention Center isn't appropriate to honor Rampton because it doesn't equal his stature. Instead, McCoy wants Rampton's name on the Salt Lake International Airport. However, McCoy says that's unlikely because there is a groundswell of support to someday name the airport after former Utah Senator Jake Garn.
