City, County, State Collaborate with Private Foundations to End Homelessness
(KCPW News) Renovations are now underway on the largest housing project for homeless people in the state. KCPW's Julie Rose reports:
A Holiday Inn in Salt Lake City is being renovated as permanent housing for more than 200 homeless individuals and families. It's the largest undertaking to date for the state, city and county collaboration to end homelessness. The project will cost more than 17 million dollars and is being funded by local governments and private foundations.
Families and individuals who currently spend extended periods of time in local homeless shelters will be eligible for the new apartments with significantly reduced rent.
Governor Jon Huntsman says the project represents a shift from merely managing homelessness to overcoming it by offering housing and support for people stuck in a homeless cycle.
The new apartments at 10th South and Main Street will be named Palmer Court in honor of former Salt Lake City mayor and homeless advocate Palmer de Paulis.
