Moratorium Placed On Payday Lenders In Salt Lake County

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) The Salt Lake County Council has approved a six-month moratorium on new payday lending businesses in unincorporated areas of the county.

Adam Burgett, a Social Justice Advocate for the Crossroads Urban Center and opponent of payday lending businesses, says he has been waiting for some level of government to take the lead in restricting the businesses. Many believe payday lenders prey on low-income citizens. Burgett says his organization has taken its concerns to the legislature for several years with little success.

The moratorium will give members of the county council more time to consider restrictions on payday lenders, as well as more time to lobby lawmakers to take up the issue at the state level.
