Salt Lake City has finally made its first open space purchase with a bond voters approved nearly four years ago. Now the city has a plan to speed up the process. KCPW's Julie Rose reports:
Salt Lake City has finally made its first open space purchase with a bond voters approved nearly four years ago. Public Services Director Rick Graham attributes the slow progress to complicated purchase deals and a shortage of applications.
The Open Space Advisory Board expected a flood of applications for the five-million dollar bond, says Graham.
They received only eight during the first round. Five of the applications met the bond criteria and two of them have now been funded for a total city contribution of 600-thousand dollars. Salt Lake County and the State are also pitching in to purchase 13-acres of natural open space above Wasatch Boulevard near 21st South. Graham says three other applications are still pending. And he says the Open Space Advisory Board plans to start actively seeking new projects for the five-million dollar bond.
The second round of open space applications begins on November 5th.
