Granite Board of Ed Plans Community Meetings, Attempts to Prevent Split

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) The Jordan School District could likely split in half, pending a vote this November. But the Granite School District isn't on the ballot yet. And members of the Granite School Board hope to keep it that way. KCPW's Julie Rose reports:

The Granite Board of Education will hold community forums at every high school in the district during the next few months. President Sarah Meier says the meetings are part of a board effort to prevent a district split.

"I would hope so, because we are really doing everything we can," says Meier. "We are going to work very hard at bringing it together and listening."

Several communities on the district's east side say Granite is too large and too focused on west-side growth to respond to their needs. The Board of Education began a series of study meetings this summer on that very issue and will now solicit public input during town hall meetings through January.

"These forums are set up to listen," says Meier. "We're hoping as we go around to all of the high schools there will be some common threads that may suggest we will need to change direction. But at this point we don't know. We're just going to listen."

A proposed district split is on the November ballot for the Jordan School District. A similar proposal for the Granite District had too many detractors to land on the ballot this year. Supporters say they'll try again.
