Businesses Still Wary of $192M Bond for SLPD

(KCPW News) Salt Lake business owners are raising alarms about the 192-million dollar price tag on a proposed bond to build new headquarters for the public safety department downtown, plus an East side precinct and a new fire training facility.

"There are concerns about if there's been sufficient review and oversight of the numbers that support this proposal," says Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce Vice President Natalie Gochnour.

Gochnour says it's unlikely the chamber's board will oppose the bond. But, she says they are working on a plan that might help keep the cost of the new buildings to a minimum. The bond will raise taxes on the average business by three-hundred dollars a year. The ballot language for the bond indicates the fire and police departments hope to require less than the full 192-million dollars. A community group led by local activist Pat Shea is campaigning in support of the bond.
