U.S. Chief Justice Speaks at BYU

(KCPW News) BYU students got a constitutional primer today from the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Justice Roberts traced the origins of the U.S. Government from the founding fathers to present day, and offered this assessment of the Supreme Court's role in democracy."An appreciation of the history of the framing of the Constitution confirms that the judicial branch was intended to be restricted to interpreting the Constitution and laws, rather than making policy on their own," says Roberts.
Justice Roberts says the framers of the Constitution gave Supreme Court Justices life-time tenure to insulate them from political pressures. Robert's speech caps an unprecedented string of high-profile Washington visitors to BYU this year including Vice President Dick Cheney and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
