Popular NPR Program to Visit in Spring 2009

This coming Spring (March 23rd through May 2nd), KCPW Public Radio will bring StoryCorps, a much sought after National Public Radio program, to Salt Lake City. StoryCorps offers people in our community a chance to record their personal stories and become part of American history, both at the Library of Congress and, for some storytellers, through broadcasts both here on KCPW, and nationally on NPR.

- IHC Won't Match Employee 401K Contributions Next Year

Intermountain Health Care has decided not to contribute to their employee's 401K retirement funds next year. IHC spokesman Daron Cowley says patients have cut back on elective care, causing a decrease in revenue.

The petroleum industry will remember 2008 as a roller-coaster of a year, says Lee Peacock of the Utah Petroleum Association. It began with skyrocketing profits, a record number of natural gas wells and Utah's pump prices leading the nation. But the industry's growth in Utah is slowing as the nation's economy falters.

- Sutherland Institute to Hold Session on Ethics Fundamentals

While ethics reform is being pushed by many legislators, the Sutherland Institute is seeking to remind public officials of basic ethics principles. The Institute's Transcend Series will focus on the Challenges of Integrity in Public Service. Series coordinator, Stan Rasmussen, says the session intends to prevent ethics problems before they happen by focusing on fundamentals.

- Cell Phones are More Distracting to Drivers than Passengers

According to a new study, drivers are more distracted by talking on a cell phone than talking to a passenger. Professor of psychology at the University of Utah and Co-author of the study, Dave Strayer, says the reason is that passengers are actually in the car and can help drivers.

- Western Governors' Association Gives Obama Energy Wish List

The Western Governors' Association has given President-elect Barack Obama an energy programs wish list. Governor Jon Huntsman's Energy Advisor, Dianne Nielson says the nation needs new national energy policies and she hopes programs will be modeled after those already in place in western states.

- Utah Attorney General's Office Wants Clarification on Restrictions of the Right to a Speedy Trial

Members of the Utah Attorney General's Office are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to clarify restrictions of the right to a speedy trial. Currently, a defendant can argue his right to a speedy trial was violated if delays were caused by the government. However, a Vermont Supreme Court ruling issued last spring states that delays by public defenders can be considered as well. Utah Assistant Attorney General Ryan Tenney says if the U.S. Supreme allowed this, it would cause many problems.
