S.L. City Officials Search For Solutions To Drug Crimes
None by Eric Ray
(KCPW News) Drug related crimes in Salt Lake City have spiked over the last year, particularly in the Pioneer Park area. City officials have pondered ways to dissuade criminals from doing business in the area, including publishing photos of those arrested.Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank opposes the idea because of the effect on the families of those arrested. He says the police shouldn't quote "be in the business of humiliation." Instead, Burbank says there should be increased treatment options available for those who want it.
The idea of publishing mug shots does have supporters however. Salt Lake City Council member and mayoral candidate Dave Buhler says he is in favor of the idea. He says the city needs to be aggressive in the war against drugs in the city, and that includes placing crime cameras in Pioneer Park should he be elected.
