Voucher Issue Draws Voters to Polls

(KCPW News) Few people usually hit the polls during off-year elections, and early voting numbers suggest that will be true today in Utah. KCPW's Julie Rose visited polling locations on Salt Lake's East bench, Westside and in the Avenues this morning to gauge voter interest:

 

Off-year elections usually draw a small turnout, and early voting numbers suggest that will be true today in Utah. Many Salt Lake City residents who visited the polls on the East bench, in the Avenues and on Salt Lake's Westside, said vouchers were a big reason they voted.

Utah's voucher law is the broadest such program in the country. National advocacy groups say the outcome of today's referendum on vouchers will impact school choice battles in other states.

Governor Jon Huntsman turned today's municipal elections into a statewide special election on vouchers at an estimated cost of three and a half million dollars. Cities and counties will cover a large portion of that cost.
