Heber Valley Residents Hope to Thwart Aspen Resort Plans

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) About thirty homeowners in three small neighborhoods near Heber got wind of a developer's plans to incorporate them into a luxury ski town, so they rushed their own application to become part of neighboring Daniels, Utah. And Kasey Bateman says they beat developer Dean Sellers by just six hours to file their own request for annexation into neighboring Daniels, Utah.

"I was up at 5 a.m. getting signatures from individuals to get this thing going," says Bateman. "That's how much we're really in disfavor of Dean. We had to act really fast, but we had to be thorough."

Dean Sellers is the Arizona developer hoping to build a luxury ski resort and call it Aspen, Utah. Town status would make him free from Wasatch County zoning laws as he develops the eight-thousand acres. But he needs at least 100 residents within the town's boundaries to qualify. Bateman believes Sellers was counting on him and the other residents of Storm Haven, Crazy Acres and Tammy Lane to meet that requirement.

If the county grants the annexation request and makes those residents a part of nearby Daniels, Utah, Sellers could be stuck developing a ski resort, instead of a full-fledged town.

It's always the last ones through the gate that want to lock it and keep everyone else out.

This kind of not in my back yard crap is why areas become so expensive to develop properly and ultimately too expensive for workforce housing to be produced.
