SLC Bond Proposition Outcome Final Tuesday

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) The Salt Lake City Police Department will find out Tuesday if it got enough votes to bond for $192 million in taxes to erect several new buildings. Proposition One failed by 291 ballots, but Salt Lake City Elections Coordinator Sonya Kintaro estimates about 2,000 provisional and absentee ballots are still being counted.

"Salt Lake County goes through each of those ballots to check on the voter's residence and verify the ballot," says Kintaro.

The valid ballots will be added to the final election tally Tuesday at 7 p.m. during the Salt Lake City Council Meeting. If the spread narrows to 167 votes or less, either side of the issue can request a recount. Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank says the bond money is crucial to law enforcement and public safety in the city. Others say it's too big a tax burden and want to explore other ways of paying for new facilities.
