(KCPW News) Utah Governor Jon Huntsman was featured today on NPR along side Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano. The two come from different political parties, but expressed unity on issues ranging from immigration to climate change. Huntsman says Governors are left with no choice but to address the issues in the face of a "vacuum" in Washington."And not surprisingly, you're seeing Western governors step up unilaterally to begin addressing these issues," says Huntsman. "I think the risk we run longer term in doing that - while we may bring solutions earlier - is that you'll find a patchwork of approaches."
Huntsman says that patchwork is risky, since it will make things difficult for energy companies and other industries. But he and Napolitano both say they'll forge ahead with state-based immigration enforcement and energy policies, in particular. Huntsman advocates cleaner coal burning technology and a cap on carbon emissions. He also says nuclear energy might be an option for Utah.
