Midday Utah begins after the 9 a.m. news

People struggling to survive violence, forced displacement, and disease in the Central African Republic, Somalia, Sri Lanka, and elsewhere often went underreported in the news this year and much of the past decade. That's according to the 10th annual list of the "Top Ten" Most Underreported Humanitarian Stories, released last week by the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders. Here to discuss those stories is Vanessa van Schoor, an operational manager for Doctors without Borders who oversees various emergency programs. She is currently based in Amsterdam and has worked with the organization in the field in North Sudan, Thailand, Burma, and elsewhere.

Last week, the Environmental Protection Agency turned down California's bid to impose fuel emissions standards stricter than the fed's on vehicles sold in the state. Sixteen other states indicated they would likely adopt the California rules. Sasha Abramsky takes on the history and politics of this controversial issue in his commentary titled "The EPA, California, and Standard Bearers." It appeared in The Guardian/UK on December 22nd, and also online at CommonDreams.org. Sasha Abramsky is a journalist, author and a Senior Fellow at Demos [DEE-mose] a New York-based think tank. His books include Conned, Hard Time Blues and American Furies.
