Winder Disappointed in Cottonwood Heights Decision

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder says he is disappointed and still trying to make sense of Cottonwood Heights decision to form its own police force. Winder says once the transition is complete, Cottonwood Heights will add just three patrol cars to the city. He says the decision also leaves the city without pooled services like SWAT and K-9. Cottonwood Heights Mayor Kelvyn Cullimore says the city is working out an agreement to share services with neighboring cities.

Staffing at the County Sheriff's office won't be affected by the Cottonwood Heights decision. Winder says his office has planned for the move to ensure they wouldn't have to lay off any officers.

Cottonwood Heights will give their notice of withdrawal to the county in the next 30 to 60 days and expects to have its own police force on the streets by late summer.
