State Board of Education Passes Property Tax Equalization Resolution
None by Elizabeth Ziegler
(KCPW News) A resolution to equalize property tax levy rates throughout the state was nearly tabled at Thursday's State Board of Education meeting. But the board eventually approved the resolution after Board Member Kim Burningham, as well as those representing Utah's rural communities, questioned the move.
Property tax equalization is an emotional issue among small rural school districts, whose patrons have significantly lower property values than urban or suburban districts with booming student populations and relatively higher property values. School districts use property taxes to help build new school facilities, and fund other maintenance and operation costs.
