Salt Lake City Mayor Plans for Proactive Role in Public Education

Jan 11, 2008 by Jeff Robinson

Newly-elected mayor of Salt Lake City Ralph Becker says the state legislature has not done enough for city schools, especially when it comes to closing the achievement gap between minorities and their peers. That's why he plans on having his administration take a very proactive role in public education. Becker will soon appoint the city's first Education Partnership Coordinator.

The mayor says a good example of what he wants to accomplish is a new, privately-funded community center at Rose Park Elementary School he visited this week. The center has a health clinic, counseling center and pre-school program. Becker plans to rally community and business support to donate to the school system.

Becker says he's met with the superintendent, school administrators, teachers and parents about his plan. He says they all fully support this partnership.
