Education, Immigration, Health-Care and Financial Stability Top List

(KCPW News) Education, health-care, immigration and financial stability for Utahns top United Way of Salt Lake City's Legislative Priorities for 2008. United Way President and CEO, Deborah Bayle, says convincing the Legislature to pass comprehensive health-care reform this session will likely prove to be the most challenging of the four initiatives. In fact, she says it could take several years to accomplish.

Bayle is more confident the United Way will once again secure funding for an outreach program to boost the number of low-income workers filing for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit. So far, it has helped secure $23 million in previously unused tax credits. And Lane Summerhays, chairman of United Ways' financial stability council, says the initial $500,000 investment in the program has already netted a return of $100 million dollars.
