Legislature Convenes on Martin Luther King Day

Jan 21, 2008 by Jeff Robinson

Today is Martin Luther King Day, and also the day the Utah legislature convenes. But that wouldn't be happening if it were up to the Salt Lake branch of the NAACP.

Jeanetta Williams, president of the local branch, is confident voters will decide to push the legislature's start date back by a day. Last year, former legislator and current Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker introduced a bill to have voters decide on the issue by amending the Constitution. The bill received unanimous support from both houses.

Executive Committee member Edward Lewis, Jr. says leading up to the vote in early November, the NAACP will be getting the word out. Martin Luther King Day was officially recognized in Utah in 2000.
