Legislature Kicks Off 2008 Session
Jan 21, 2008 by Elizabeth Ziegler
(KCPW News) Day One of the Utah Legislature began today as it has for 102 years - with the crack of a gavel. It was a morning full of ceremony - invocations, patriotic tributes and speeches.House Speaker Greg Curtis chose to inspire the assembled representatives with advice gleaned from reading the letters of Utah's early lawmakers. For example, he cautioned, don't be duplicitious, have patience, and know your influences.
In the Senate Chambers, President John Valentine asked the Senators to be firm like the stone used to build the capitol, but flexible, like its newly retrofitted, earthquake-proof footings. But above all, he said, their job is to govern well.
