Governor Interested in Two-Tier Income Tax

Taxpayers Get to Choose

(KCPW News) A unique compromise among Utah legislators and the governor's office would allow taxpayers to choose between the current income tax system or a 4.5 to 5 percent flat tax with no deductions.

Governor Huntsman says the state could create a simple online tool to help taxpayers choose the more beneficial income tax given individual circumstances.

"If the numbers are where I think they're likely to fall on this particular approach," Huntsman says, "then I'd like to call a special session before the end of the year and take a look at using the $70 million, which has been earmarked for the purposes of tax reform, and actually reforming our tax system."
