Salt Lake County to Embark On Larger Solar Power Projects
Jan 25, 2008 by Jeff Robinson
(KCPW News) Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon says one key issue has to be worked out before the county can start adding larger solar power projects to county buildings, like the Salt Palace. Corroon says the county has to work with Rocky Mountain Power to figure out how much it will be paid for the excess energy that goes back into the power grid. The mayor has also been talking to lawmakers this week about allowing projects that produce up to two megawatts of power, eighty times more than the current limit of 25 kilowatts, which is only enough to power a house. He says everyone he's talked to so far has been on board. The county currently has solar panels on the Salt Palace.
The mayor says the county wants to reduce its energy and water costs by 20 percent by the end of 2009, something he says could save millions of dollars to be used on projects or given back to taxpayers.
