Supports Bill to Bring USTAR to High Schools

(KCPW News) Governor Jon Huntsman wants to extend the Utah Science Technology and Research initiative, or USTAR, to include summer programs at high schools. The governor is supporting a bill by Representative Ron Bigelow that would give year-round contracts to math and science teachers.

It would also give grants to school districts and charter schools willing to provide math and science education during the summer. The governor says students would benefit from either remedial instruction or accelerated learning.

The bill would allocate $11 million a year to the program.

Governor Huntsman says this would not only help retain math and science teachers by giving them more money, but also prepare Utah students for increasing opportunities in math and science.

The bill was unanimously approved by the House Education Committee today. It will now go to the full house for consideration.
