Early Voting Turnout Low

Jan 29, 2008 by Jeff Robinson

(KCPW News) Both Salt Lake County and the State Elections Office say early voting turnout for the upcoming February 5th primary has been disappointing. But Joseph Demma, chief of staff for Lieutenant Governor Gary Herbert, says the turnout will still be higher than the ten percent that voted in the 2000 primary, which was scheduled too late to be an important factor in the Presidential race.

Demma says Mitt Romney's campaign will draw a larger amount of voters to the Republican primary. With the tight race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, he believes turnout will also be much better in the Democratic race.

Salt Lake County is expecting up to 40 percent turnout. The county clerk's office says voters could face longer lines if early voting numbers don't improve.

However, the county now only needs three more poll workers to volunteer for the election. Tuesday is the last day voters can register in person at the clerk's office, while Friday is the last day for early voting.
