Veterans Nursing Home Passes Senate Committee

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) A Senate committee on Utah's Capitol Hill voted unanimously yesterday to send a bill to spend $19.7 million on the construction of a veterans nursing home in Ogden to the full Senate.

Terry Schow, Utah Director of Veterans Affairs, told the committee that building the home now would be a sound economic decision. He said construction costs are going up $1.2 million per year. In addition, the United States Office of Veterans Affairs will contribute more than $3 million per year to the home for veterans care.

The bill would also prohibit the state from building any further veterans nursing homes until it receives federal reimbursement for the Ogden home. The bill has already passed the House of Representatives.
