Lawmakers Discuss Funding Computer Upgrades at Universities
None by Eric Ray
(KCPW News) State universities could soon have a fund designated to help pay for upgrades and maintenance of their computer systems.Republican Representative Stephen Clark of Provo, sponsor of House Bill 253, says the state's schools are beyond five years in their infrastructure. He says industry standards are now three years. He adds 90% of any institution's activities include the use of information technology.
The bill appropriates $8 million of on-going money for the fund. Some lawmakers expressed concern that a cap wasn't placed on the growth of the fund. Despite that, the bill passed the House by a vote of 54-15 and will now be considered by the Senate.
